The Bavarian Forest National Park is often coated with a thick snow cover during the winter months. Then, our wild nature seems very primeval and calm. Nevertheless, the complete 350-kilometer hiking trail network is still available for you. Since only a small part of the trails are cleared or rolled, it is advisable to hike with snowshoes or touring skis only - in case of a lot of snow. Doing so, you are able to explore the national park’s core areas in winter as well.
During this cold season, it is prohibited to leave the signposted trails, in order to protect endangered animal and plant species, such as the capercaillie. In addition, you should bring enough provisions and drinks, since the mountain huts are just partially open during the winter time.
